Going Local in the 2016-17 School Year

On June 28th, Bent On Learning completed our 16th year teaching yoga in New York City public schools. What made this year extra special was our new team of local teachers from the Bronx, all of whom received scholarships to complete their 95-hour RCYT certification with us.  Because of them, we were able to expand our presence in the Bronx, with new programs at PS 95x, JHS 22, PS 161 and PS 214 (who generously hosted our training), and hundreds of new yoga students!

  • Number of yoga teachers from the Bronx who trained with us: 10
  • Number of classes taught by new teachers: 215
  • Number of Bronx students served: 450

yenis“Yoga training and education in the school community of South Bronx are scarce. Through the work I do at schools, I have noticed the need for yoga education for our children to address emotional, behavior issues and increase healthier lifestyles.”
-Yenis Thomas, School Guidance Counselor, PS 161

Stay tuned for the full report of our program impact in the coming months — we’re crunching the numbers with the help of Algorhythm, our evaluation partner in measuring social-emotional learning and youth development outcomes in our students.

Having teachers who serve their own communities not only makes yoga more accessible to the kids we serve, but creates a more scalable and sustainable program for years to come. Happy summer to our schools and supporters!
