Black History Month

Honoring our teachers…

Sinikiwe Dhliwayo  |  Dianne Bondy  |  Crystal McCreary
Teri Richardson  |  Kate Johnson

Black History Month honors the achievements of African Americans and recognizes the integral role blacks have played throughout U.S. history. Bent On Learning understands the importance of representation and inclusion, and how our students are able to see themselves in a positive light when represented by teachers and other leaders placed before them in classrooms, yoga rooms and beyond. We would like to highlight our African American teachers who have contributed greatly to the success of our students, communities, organization and the yoga-in-schools movement.

Please join us in celebrating their incredible work and generous spirits, not just during Black History Month, but every day throughout the year.

“Dear Bent On Learning” Student Letters

Each year we ask our students to share how yoga has impacted on their lives — whether it be with their studies, at home or with friends. Byron, 5th grade, shares the important changes he experienced in yoga class with our instructor, Ms. Sherry.

Give to Bent On Learning to allow for more students to receive the benefits of yoga during the school day, giving them tools to regulate their minds and bodies and to reach their potential.

Yoga Gives Back

From the classroom to the studio!  Yoga is about community and the practice is about inclusion.  These are values that we, at BOL, instill in our students and share with our studio partners below.  Their on-going support helps us bring the gift of yoga to more students at a young age.

A Special Thanks To

Going Local in the 2016-17 School Year

On June 28th, Bent On Learning completed our 16th year teaching yoga in New York City public schools. What made this year extra special was our new team of local teachers from the Bronx, all of whom received scholarships to complete their 95-hour RCYT certification with us.  Because of them, we were able to expand our presence in the Bronx, with new programs at PS 95x, JHS 22, PS 161 and PS 214 (who generously hosted our training), and hundreds of new yoga students!

  • Number of yoga teachers from the Bronx who trained with us: 10
  • Number of classes taught by new teachers: 215
  • Number of Bronx students served: 450

yenis“Yoga training and education in the school community of South Bronx are scarce. Through the work I do at schools, I have noticed the need for yoga education for our children to address emotional, behavior issues and increase healthier lifestyles.”
-Yenis Thomas, School Guidance Counselor, PS 161

Stay tuned for the full report of our program impact in the coming months — we’re crunching the numbers with the help of Algorhythm, our evaluation partner in measuring social-emotional learning and youth development outcomes in our students.

Having teachers who serve their own communities not only makes yoga more accessible to the kids we serve, but creates a more scalable and sustainable program for years to come. Happy summer to our schools and supporters!
